Battery Value Chain
From Production to Responsible Recycling: Safeguarding Nigeria's Battery Future
Nigeria's Path to a
Sustainable Circular Economy
Batteries are essential to Nigeria’s automotive, power generation, and renewable energy sectors. However, once they reach the end of their useful life, batteries can become hazardous waste if not properly managed.
The battery value chain describes the complete lifecycle of a battery - from production and use to collection, recycling, and safe material recovery - underpinned by the principles of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework.
Value Chain Benefits
Reduce Pollution
Prevents toxic lead and acid from seeping into soil and aquifers.
Protect Public Health
Safeguards scrap workers, transporters, and communities from lead exposure.
Resource Efficiency
Recovers 99%+ of lead and plastics, cutting energy requirements by 75% compared to mining.
Support Compliance
Coordinates stakeholders to meet NESREA regulations and EPR compliance.

Value Chain Stages
Production & Importation
Detailed Overview
Batteries are either manufactured locally or imported to support vehicles, generators, solar installations, and energy storage systems. Producers and importers place batteries on the Nigerian market and, under the EPR Programme, bear responsibility for supporting the environmentally sound management of batteries at end of life. This includes financing and participating in collection, recycling, and compliance mechanisms coordinated through ARBR.
